Organisational Structure
The President and Commander-in-Chief is the Visitor to the University as in all other Federal Universities. There is a Governing Council charged with the general control and superintendence of the University policy, finances and properties of the University including its public relations. The Chairman of Council is the Pro-Chancellor of the University. The University Chancellor is appointed by the Federal Government of Nigeria and he takes precedence over all other members of the University and when he is present, presides at all meetings of convocation and assemblies convened for the conferment of degrees. The National Universities Commission co-ordinates all activities of the Federal Universities in line with the laws establishing such Universities. The Vice-Chancellor directs the activities of the University and he is the Chief Executive and Academic Officer of the University and ex-officio Chairman of the Senate.
The University Senate is, amongst its many functions, responsible for the organization and control of the academic programmes of the University, promotion of research as well as student admission and discipline. Members of Senate are comprised of all Professors, Deans of Schools and Librarian as well as other members appointed by Congregation in line with the Decree establishing the University. The Board of Studies of each of the Schools is composed of such members of closely related branches of learning or discipline as may be prescribed by the University Senate.
Administration Set-Up of the University
The key administrative officers of the University and their functions are as follows:
1. The Vice-Chancellor is the chief executive and academic officer of the University and ex-officio Chairman of the Senate. All staff of the University are answerable to the Vice-Chancellor.
2. The Deputy Vice-Chancellors are directly responsible to the Vice-Chancellor and on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor sit as Chairmen of Committees as directed by the Vice-Chancellor. They assist the Vice-Chancellor on the day-to-day administration of the University.
3. The Registrar is the chief administrative officer of the University and is responsible to the Vice-Chancellor for the day-to-day general administration of the University. He shall by virtue of that office be the Secretary to Senate, Congregation, Convocation and Council.
4. The Bursar is the chief financial officer of the University and is responsible to the Vice-Chancellor for the day-to-day administration and control of the financial affairs of the University.
5. University Librarian is the chief academic and administrative officer of the University Library, responsible to the Vice-Chancellor for the planning, development and management of the University library system.
6. The Director of Works and Services is responsible to the Vice-Chancellor for coordinating the maintenance of roads, University houses, furniture, vehicles and electrical, refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment, and the maintenance of services like telephones, electricity and water supplies in the University.
7. The Director of Physical Planning is responsible for implementing decisions of the University's Development Committee in the context of the University's Consultants and the various users in the University. He is also responsible to the Vice-Chancellor for co-ordinating the works of consultants and of contractors, where applicable, and ensuring compliance with the approved overall planning goals of the University.
8. The Director of Academic Planing is responsible to the Vice-Chancellor for the implementation of the decisions of the University's Academic Planning Committee which frames plans for the academic development of the University. He also keeps students and staff statistics needed for planning and budgeting.
9. The Director of Health Services serves as the medical doctor in charge of the University's Health Services Unit which is the clinic of the University which is responsible for taking care of the health of staff and students.
10. The Dean of Student Affairs is responsible to the Vice-Chancellor for all the Welfare problems of students including the maintenance of halls of residence, catering and, with suitable assistance, students' counselling.
11. The Dean of Postgraduate School is responsible to the Vice-Chancellor on all matters related to issues of Postgraduate Programmes of the University.
12. Director, Computer Centre is responsible to the Vice-Chancellor on matters relating to the Centre, staff and student records and University statistics.
13. The Director, Centre for Industrial Studies is responsible to the Vice-Chancellor on matters relating to the Centre for Industrial Studies.
