Urban and Regional Planning Programme

 

 

INTRODUCTION

Urban and Regional Planning Programme is a professional discipline in its own totality. It is the art and science of ordering land uses and managing the environment in total based on detailed understanding and analysis of societal needs within the socio-economics and environmental management framework.

It is a broad - based discipline, requiring a multi-disciplinary approach and knowledge, therefore requires a comprehensive education and training in the planning design, Management and monitoring of the total environment.

The comprehensive education and training concerned with the information, design implementation and monitoring of land use plan development, policies at the Rural (Local) Urban and Regional levels for effective Environmental Development and Management.

The Urban and Regional Planning Programme of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi was introduced basically to train Professional Physical Planners with emphasis on bridging the gap between a high rate of Urbanization, environmental degradation and high level man-power needed in the country. The Programme intends to prepare skilled professionals to meet the challenges and to enhance environmental sensitivity, organization and balance for comfortable human, habitation.

PHYLOSOPHY

Urban and Regional Planning is a professional course which aims at training a high level man-power in the art and science of anticipating changes in the environment and ordering and managing these changes as they affect the efficient use of Land at Rural, Urban and Regional levels. The training of a planner requires a comprehensive, broad based and inter disciplinary education so as to equip him/her with the necessary tools to formulate, implement and monitor policies and plans at all levels.

GOALS

The goal of a B.Tech (Urban and Regional Planning) Programmed of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University is to exposed the student to the economic, social, political and environmental concern and equip them with analytical, design and administrative techniques to evaluate and resolve problems of physical growth, conflict and change.

OBJECTIVES

Training of sound professional planners who can operate effectively in the field of Urban and Regional Planning related activities

i. Equipping students to anticipate analyse and offer solution to problems of land use at local, urban and regional levels. The emphasis is to expose students to the technical aspects of project planning and implementation.

ii. Training of students who will be able to relate knowledge and skills with immediate community problems.

iii. Equipping students with the technical skills in specific areas like computer- aided design, geographic information system environmental impact assessment etc.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENT

Normal Admission

For admission into the 100 level, candidates are required to obtain at least 5 credit passes any of the SSCE Examination, which must include Mathematics, English Language and Geography. The other passes must be in any two of the following: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Technical Drawing, Fine Arts, IRK/CRK or Economics. Candidates must also sit for the UME , which must include Mathematics and Geography.

A student who is admitted to a Programme of studies for a first degree without having initially fulfilled the University General Requirement in English language shall fulfill it before proceeding to the 200 level courses.

Direct Entry

For admission into 200 level of the Programme, candidates must obtain at least two passes at the 'A' Level, HSC or IJMB, one of which must be in Geography. The other could be from the following Mathematics, Geology, Physics and Chemistry. Candidates with OND/ND in Urban and Regional Planning. Architecture, Estate Management and Land Surveying with a pass at Credit Level may be considered for direct admission provided they also meet the 'O' Level admission requirement.

Special Admission

Candidate may be admitted to the appropriate level of the Programme if they obtain HND (Urban and Regional Planning) at credit level.
