The University Computer Centre (UCC) started operation in 1984, barely three years after the inception of the University. It was carved out of the Mathematical Sciences Programme in the then School of Science and Science Education and headed by the then Dr. E.J.A. Edemenang (now late) as its first Director. At its inception it had a staff strength of eight with a VAX and Hewlett Packard Computers on the network. This Centre went through structuring and improvement that by the 1990s it has evolved to be one of the best University Computer Centres in the country. During this period, the VAX machines were replaced by personal computers, and short to medium-range courses were introduced for both staff of the University and the outsiders.
In 1998. Dr. M. H. Alhassan was appointed as Director when the then Dr. E.J.A. Edemenang was promoted to the rank of Professor of computer science and given headship of Mathematical Sciences Programme. Malam Sani Ali of Physics Programme, was appointed as Ag. Director of the Centree in 2001 when Dr. M.H. Alhassan went on secondment to the Corporate Affairs Commission of the Presidency, Abuja . The University computer Centre went through various reorganization, infrastructural expansion, donations from governmental organizations and procurements by the University Authorities. By February 2003. Malam Sani Ali was replaced by Dr. O. K. Likkason (also of Physics Programme) as Ag. Director and is currently the one on seat. Many changes, innovations, restructuring and redefining have been taking place since the inception of the present Ag. Director. For now there are 11 staff members: one Asst. Chief Engineer, two Senior Executive Officer, one Senior Technical Officer, one Personal Secretary, one Programmer, one Higher Technical Officer, one Typist, one each of Driver, Computer Operator, Clerical Officer and Cleaner/Caretaker.
Presently the centre has four operational units and a CISCO laboratory. The four units include (1) Admin/personnel (2) Technical/Engineering, (3) Support services and (4) Data Processing/ students services. The Centre has over 50 desktops. 45 thin clients and 30 machines for the CISCO lab in addition to other accessories such as scanners, projects etc.
Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Bauchi, Nigeria being a University of Science Technology has the need for adequate computing facilities. In addition, the world is driven by I.T based technologies, which have wider applications in decision-making, financial management, design, data processing, research in all sectors of the economy, education etc. The University Computer Centre still maintains adequate computing facilities, which are available to her users (staff and students).
The unlimited access to computing facilities has paid off because over the years graduates of theis university, especially in Engineering and computer Science, have been very favourably disposed to the job market. The computer centre is also responsible for maintenance and procurement of computing facilities of the university. It is also into software design, development and maintenance.
