Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University

The Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi,was one of three University established by the Federal Government of Nigeria in 1980. Its first batch of students was admitted in October, 1981, for the pre-degree and remedial programme, while the degree courses of the School of Science and Science Education began in October,1982. Today, the following academic programmes are available in the School: Biology Sciences, Chemistry, Geology, Physics, Mathematics and Science Education. Various degree options are available in each of these programmes, for example, Statistics and Computer Science in Mathematics Programme; Pure and Nuclear Physics in Physics programme; Industrial Chemistry and Pure Chemistry options in Chemistry Programme; while Microbiology, Zoology, Botany and Ecology are offered in the Biological Sciences.

One very important function of our programme in the School of Science is the inclusion of a one year period of Industrial Attachment in the five year integrated degree programme. This offers students the opportunity of spending one year outside the University on attachment at various institutes, industries, research centres and organisations. The rationale for this is in our belief that graduates from this institution should not only be knowledgeable in the theoretical aspect of their chosen fields, but they should be well equipped with practical skills and be able to use their minds and hands to provide a high degree of improvisation and innovation in their various vocations hereafter.

There is no doubt that the lack of personnel with adequate practical skills has been the most important constraint to our economic advancement as a nation. Experience of the developed world has shown that attainment of a viable economic order depends to a great extent on the existence of a vigorous and functional scientific and technological base. The nation will undoubtedly look up to you to provide these skills and capacities.
