BRIEF HISTORY OF THE PROGRAMME
The Petroleum Engineering Programme of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi established in October, 1998 is the first and so far, the only Petroleum Engineering Department in this part of the country and one of the current six (6) departments of Petroleum Engineering in all the universities in Nigeria.
The Professional field of Petroleum Engineering is such that reflect the need of the nation at such a period that increasingly call for technological progress in all fields of endeavor, not the least in chemicals and hydrocarbon energy source. With the recent Oil/Gas exploration activities of the Upper Benue Trough (Bauchi-Gombe region), Gongola Basin and the Lake Chad , the birth, of the programme can not come at a better time.
The students of this programme commenced their study by pursuing the same program of study, up till the end of the second year, with other students of the school of engineering except in some few subjects. From the third year on ward, the students branched to the Petroleum Engineering field of specialization for an in-depth study. At the end of the first semester of the fourth year, they proceed to a six months Industrial Training. They all return with other returning students at the beginning of the fifth year for their final stay in the University.
By the end of its first year of establishment, the Petroleum Engineering Programme consists of four Academic Staff, a Typist and a clerical assistant.
Today, in its seventh year, the Programme is recording a steady increase in student enrolment and staff development. The programme is independent; and through the membership of the Coordinator in the committee of Head of Petroleum Engineering Departments of Nigerian Universities, making adequate progress in linkages with the Petroleum Industry and other Petroleum Research Institutes.
VISION AND MISSION STATEMENT
The aims of the Programme are to give students an understanding of the basic principles of Petroleum Engineering and to enable them take a lead in the realization of the nation's dream in this field. Not only will the graduates of the Programme acquire the breath of knowledge necessary for technological innovation but the academic staffs of the Programme are utilized efficiently and effectively. The students develop practical skills by training in the School of Engineering Workshop and by spending long periods of their Industrial Training with relevant Industry in the field during which lectures are practically applied and reports of achievement submitted for assessment. Research and design projects increase the intellectual ability, the strength to lead and ability to do independent work by the students. The design project is a group work in which the students are made to design a process, drilling/completion or production plant, reservoir project and are made to defend the final design. The research project is an individual one and is mainly a subject, which will test the student intellect. Both projects are graded and constitute to the final grading of the students. Also the IT Report will be assessed and graded forming part of the students overall final result.
