Library

 

 

The University Library, located at the Yelwa Campus of the University, was established in August 1981 and opened to the University community in October 1981. As at 30 th June 1992 , the collections number some 35,000 volumes and 478 current journals. Total periodical titles number 1,210. From 1981 to 1989 the library was housed in a temporary building of 1007 square metres with 120 seats. However, the New Storey Library building measuring 2142 square metres has a total capacity for 165,380 volumes and 516 readers. It also has 40 carrels reserved for academic staff and post-graduate students. The new building was occupied on April 2, 1990.

The library building incorporates an integrated computerized library system which, when fully installed, will be user-oriented as well as user-friendly. The library is coordinating the Inventory Taking Project for Science and Technology Resources by the readers, Ensure expeditious retrieval of information for users, aid the library in its current awareness services, and enable resource sharing among libraries within and outside.

The University library is closed on public holidays unless otherwise announced.

VISION AND MISSION STATEMENTS:

The University Library, established to provide strong bibliographical support to its parent institution, has the following objectives:

1. To collect the most up-date information to support the learning, teaching, research and consultancy activities of the academic community;

2. To collect such information not only in book form but also in non-book such as slides, films, transparencies, government documents, tapes, records etc.

3. To give user oriented service to the University community, by quickly disseminating the information collected to all who need it;

4. To aid the University to develop the humane, liberal and social side of; Scientist, by providing selected materials in the arts, humanities and social sciences;

5. To provide materials on Nigerian history, languages, culture, social and economic life so as to enhance the spirit of national cohesion and understanding;

6. To collect materials on Bauchi State to form a Resource Centre on Bauchi history, culture, social and economic life;

7. To collect materials produced by the University in all its Schools and Programmes and by all its staff so as to preserve these for posterity and for future research activities;

8. To provide a centre of excellence of library collections in academic areas selected by the University, for use by University staff and research scholars from within and outside Nigeria , specializing in the areas selected;

9. To give leadership in library services in Bauchi State by actively participating in Nigerian Library Association activities;

10. To cooperate with other Nigerian libraries in resource sharing through photocopying, inter-library lending, and courier service;

11. To form part of the national information network by participating in the National Union Catalogues and Serials Union List, based at the National Library of Nigeria; those produced by the committee of University Librarians of Nigerian Universities (CULNU); and those produced by NADICEST;

12. To undertake research into relevant library problems.

LIBRARY ORGANIZATION

There is a University Library Committee, with the Vice-Chancellor as the Chairman. The Committee is advisory to the University Librarian. It comprises Schools and Programme Coordinators at professorial level, the Registrar, a Student Representative, and an External Adviser, normally a University Librarian.

The activities of the library are organized under four main divisions, namely:

Administration Division, Collection Development Division, Readers Services Division and Technical Services Division respectively:

Administration Division:

The Division is responsible for policies, system planning, coordination, personnel, finance, accommodation, publications and day-to-day administration of the library. The Library Staff strength is 58 with 17 professionals, 16 para-professionals and 25 others. The Division supervises the activities of the two units namely; Computer and Bindery Units:

Computer Unit:

The Computer Unit over-sees the applications of computers to library activities and the current computer networking of the entire library building. The Unit organizes in-house computer appreciation courses for the staff. It is regularly organized particularly as the need arises.

The library has acquired more than twenty four computers which have been distributed within the other units of the library to enhance the library computerization and Internet access.

Most of the staff are computer literate and the University library has Internet access.

Bindery Unit:

The Bindery Unit is responsible for mending and rebounding of library books and book related materials. The Unit is under the supervision of the University Librarian.

Collection Development Division:

This Division is responsible for acquiring, processing and building library collection to facilitate the University to achieve its objectives. The Division comprises Acquisition and Cataloguing Units:

Acquisition Unit:

It is the sole responsibility of the acquisition unit to acquire information materials after careful selection. Materials are acquired through purchase using library budget. Other responsibilities of the Acquisition unit are to develop library collection either by gift, exchange, request, institutional membership, repository or legal deposit.

Cataloguing Unit

The Unit is the nerve of all library material processing. It catalogues, classified/indexes and abstract acquired materials. It also prepares all access points for retrievals as well as maintains all retrievals systems. The units use the LCCS for cataloguing and classification of all materials.

Readers Services Division:

The Division is responsible for circulation, reservation reference, current awareness service, bibliographic instruction and inter-library cooperation. It coordinates the indexing and abstracting services of the library. The Division also supervises the activities of five units namely; documents, reference, serials, circulation and audio-visual units:

Documents Unit:

The Unit houses official's publications of governmental, non-governmental, national and international, research institutions, as well as publications by staff & students of ATBU known as University Archives and materials on Bauchi State "Bauchiana". The collections of this Unit are "grey literature", which were received mostly or acquired through gifts/ donations. The basic services revolve around consultation and information provision to all categories of users.

Reference Unit:

The Unit houses all the reference materials, answers all enquiries pertaining Library and its resources. The Unit also provides photocopying services of its resources to the users on affordable price for home use. It is also responsible for inter-library cooperation activities of the library i.e. obtaining materials needed by the users but not available from other cooperating libraries, introduces users to cooperating libraries etc. The Unit undertakes indexing activities or articles published in the newspapers and magazines.

Serials Unit:

This unit is responsible for selecting, ordering and processing of journals. Backlog of Journals and Newspapers are bound to reserve their life span. Selective Dissemination Information (SDI) and Current Awareness Services (CAS) are provided for its users. It is also responsible to one-to one information delivery. Orientation of Students on Industrial Training (IT) is also done conducted by the unit. Furthermore the unit is mandated with the responsibility of maintaining up-to-date records both in the Kardex and Public Catalogue.

Circulation Unit:

This unit is responsible for the registration of all eligible users charging and discharging of books, compilation of overdue list, preparation of shift duty rosters, compilation of statistics of books and users in the wings, Reserve and Counter and above all enforcing the library regulations governing the use of books.

Audio-Visuals:

On the second floor of the library, there is a section devoted exclusively to

Audio-Visual collections: audio and video tapes and films. The collections are on closed circulation and are to be used only in the Audio-Visual Unit. The Unit is now fully operational.

Technical Services Division:

The Division when fully developed will be responsible for catalogue cards production, reprography and printing.

USERS OF THE LIBRARY:

The following categories of users are allowed access to the collections of the library:- University Council Members; Academic; Senior Administrative and Technical Staff of the University; Students of the University; Members of the Convocation; Occasional users from outside the University; with special permission from the University Librarian (for reference and research purpose only).

REGISTRATION:

All readers must register before making use of the library. Registration is renewable every academic year. All registered members of the library are issued with Library Identity Cards bearing their passport photographs. They must show the cards to gain entrance into the Library.

LENDING:

Circulation Collections in the Library may be borrowed by the following categories of registered members: Undergraduate, Postgraduate Students, Academic Staff, Senior Administrative and Technical Staff may borrow four books for two weeks, six books for two weeks, six books for one semester and three books for two weeks respectively.

All loans may be renewed if they are not recalled or needed by other users.

RESERVATION:

The Library operates a Reserved Book System for materials needed by many users. This is to enable as many users as possible to benefit from such materials. Readers use such materials within the Library in the Reserved Book Room on the Ground Floor next door to the Circulation Desk.

INDEXING ACTIVITIES:

Local newspapers are important primary sources of information on every aspect of life in the country. The library regularly indexes all local newspapers titles to which it subscribes. The Library also indexes selected science and technology current serials serial titles based on the subject profiles of the academic staff of thee University. This form the basis of the SDI services of the library. Furthermore, the library participates in the Nigerian Periodic Index (NPI). This is resource sharing Project of the Committee of University Librarians of Nigeria Universities (CULNU). The Library is responsible for Nigerian Serials titles in Engineering for NPI.

INTER-LIBRARY COOPERATION:

The Library provides some access to world knowledge in Science and Technology through the International Photocopying Services of the British Council Library.

A member of the Academic Staff can requests for photocopies of journal articles through the Library from British Council Library. Beneficiaries pay for the cost of coupons used in photocopying requests in excess of the approved number of articles because of limited funds available for library resources.
