HISTORY OF THE SCHOOL:

The International Secondary School , Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University , Bauchi was established on 4 th November, 1996 .

ATBU is the proprietor of the school and the school has a Board chaired by the Coordinator Environmental Management Technology, ATBU - Dr. Abdul Qadir Ibrahim.

The school started with only sixty - five students, thirteen teaching staff, six non - teaching staff and seventeen subjects were taught under the pioneer Principal - Alhaji Bello Zailani Jama'are. Ten years after its inception, today the school can boast of sixty teaching staff (with minimum qualification of first degree), fifteen non - academic staff and over one thousand students.

At the junior level, eighteen subjects are offered and eighteen at the senior level.

During the ten years, the school was variously administered by four principals. First was Alhaji Bello Zailani Jama'are who nurtured the school from 1996 - 1999 and handed the mantle of leadership to Prof. Isa A. Ochepa who steered the school until 2003 and Mal. Aliyu Muhammad Hassan took over. Currently, Mr. Gandu Abdu is the Principal (2004 to date).

The School Management Board was initially chaired by Dr. A. B. Muhammad who was then the Deputy Vice - Chancellor Administration, Prof. Garba Aliyu Babaji (present VC) took over in 2001, and handed over to Prof. S. L. Kela in 2001 and Dr. A. Q. Ibrahim is now the Chairman (2004 to date).

FUNCTIONS:

The school was established to function as a Comprehensive Day Secondary School meaning in terms of subjects, there would be Science, Art and Commercial subjects taught, based on the new system of National Policy on Education (6-3-3-4). There is no discrimination in the selection of subjects but varied to allow students' capabilities and interests.

The school having been established to take care of University staff children/wards, has gone further to embrace qualified students from the environ (40% for staff and 60% to the public).

OBJECTIVES:

The objectives of setting up the school among others are:

1. To provide accessible education to the university and host communities.

2. To serve as a place where Technology Education students of the university can carry out their Industrial Training Programme.

3. To provide the good quality education that will help the university to retain its staff as their children/wards will be catered for educationally.

4. To improve secondary school education in Bauchi State .
