The Geology Programme, ATBU, was established in 1982 as one of the programmes offered by the then Federal University of Technology Bauchi.
Since its establishment twenty-three years ago, the programme has grown in both student population, staff and teaching facilities. Today, despite the high staff turnover in recent years, we have modest academic staff strength of 10 made up of 2 professors, 1 senior lecturer, 4 lecturers I; 1 lecturer II; and 2 assistant lecturers. Our current undergraduate student population stands at 280 with additional 15 postgraduate students.
Our laboratory facilities have improved with the recent acquisition of the AAS and the reconditioning of the Euromex polarizing microscope with resolution lenses and equipped with camera for taking photomicrographs. Our thin-section-making workshop has continued to function and provides the much-needed thin sections for undergraduate teaching and postgraduate research.
An Earth Sciences Library (Chevron assisted) has continued to improve in the quality and quantity of journal publications available.
VISION AND MISSION STATEMENT
The programme's mission was to produce the manpower required to explore and exploit the nation's mineral resources as well as water supply. Production of applied geologists with strong field bias has remained the main objective.
