The Industrial Chemistry Programme began as a unit under the umbrella of the School of Science and Science Education in October, 1981. Along with other Programmes in the then School of Science and Science Education, it is involved in the teaching of integrated five- year degree Programme leading to the award of the B. Tech. degree in Industrial Chemistry. In addition to the undergraduate Programme, some postgraduate courses are offered as well leading to the degrees of M. Sc. and Ph.D. in Chemistry. Details of these degree Programmes are contained in the Departmental Brochure on Syllabus as well as the University Prospectus.
The teaching objectives of the Industrial Chemistry Programme are as follows:
(a) to provide to students with a through grounding in the principles and qualitative scientific methods of the Chemical Sciences;
(b) induce in the students a sense of curiosity as well as an enquiring mind in order to encourage and develop in them creative thinking and research.
(c) generate in them an awareness of the resources in their immediate environment so as to enhance solutions to the challenges of our times for a march towards nation buildings;
(d) to seek to educate and train Chemists; particularly applied chemists, who can think fundamentally about their subject and who can appropriate the knowledge in solving industrial problems.
These objectives have been met to a large extent. The Programme under the leadership of five former heads of department, since inception, has contributed immensely to the growth of the school as well as the entire university servicing virtually all schools in the University in addition to the integrated five year degree Programme.
