Centre for Industrial Studies

 



INTRODUCTION
The Centre for Industrial Studies was established alongside the school of engineering at the inception of the University in 1980. It consists of four sections namely: Machine Shop, Fitting Shop, Woodwork Shop, Welding and Fabrication Shop as well as casting bay for small components.

The Centre provides services to all the programmes and units of the School of Engineering , some programmes of the School of Science , Agriculture and Agricultural Technology, as well as the School of Technology Education of the University.

At the undergraduate level, the Centre provides the training of students in workshop practice which include fabrication and welding, fitting, machining and the general use of mechanical hand tools. The Centre provides training for students for the students work experience programme (SWEP) and the Students Industrial Work Experience (SIWES). Limited number of students from various institutions is also accepted for training at the Centre on the SIWES/SWEP programmes.

The Centre also facilitates students from various departments undertaking their final year projects. The Centre facilitates collaborative research, postgraduate projects within and outside the University. The Centre undertakes design and production of prototype products for various organizations and undertakes manufacture of simple machinery, spare parts, as well as classroom and laboratory equipment. In so doing the Centre gives a major contribution to knowledge to the community.

The C.I.S. facilitates relevant technological training, equipment appreciation and research support. The Centre develops future professionals Engineers, Technologists and Industrial craftsman.

MISSION/VISION STATEMENT

Actualization of research findings in terms of Design production and testing. Striving to attain the status of a centre of excellence in the industrial sector through the development of relevant technologies

OBJECTIVES

To provide academic and professional excellence in Engineering and technological development, provision of manpower training in Engineering Technology. Provision of service support to the University, schools and the community at large as well as provision of consultancy services. To produced seasoned professionals in Engineering technologist and reliable industrial craftsmen through practical training. Undertake any activities appropriate for the University of Technology and the community of the highest standard.

SHORT AND LONG TERM OBJECTIVES

The following are on going pursuance of academic activities such as training, Research and Development and it's application within the community.

LONG TERM OBJECTIVES

Expension and modernization of the present infrastructure.
Training / expansion of training facilities which include the provision of Furnaces for metallurgical studies, provision of foundry shop, provision of automobile shop, expansion of wood work technology, fabrication engineering, and painting shop and prototype exhibition shed.
