Brief history of the programme
The building programme was established in the 1991/1992 academic session under the headship of Eng A.U. Elinwa; the programme started graduating students in 1996 and has so far graduated 60 students. The programme has a total enrolment figure of 237 undergraduate students as at 2005/2006 academic session. The programme also runs a postgraduate diploma in construction management which started in the 1999/2000 session with an average enrolment figure of 60 students/set. The programme has also registered it first Ph D candidate in 2004/2005 session.
VISSION AND MISSION STATEMENT
The philosophy underlying building education is to develop and advance the science and practice of building technology and construction management. Building Technology involves building assembly/construction techniques while construction management is the planning and control of building process covering sales management, contract management, financial management, building production and maintenance.
The Bachelor of Technology in Building Programme at A.T.B.U. allows the Builder the opportunity to apply recent technological developments to the solution of current building construction problems. The objectives of this Programme are to train competent graduates in building construction process and its management.
The building graduate is trained to interact with other allied professionals in the construction industry and to perform the following activities:-
a) Project management consultancy including financial planning as a direct service to the client.
b) Construction management of contracts and direct labour projects.
c) Building maintenance including conversion, improvements, and alterations of existing buildings.
d) Management and supervision of services installations in building.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
i) NORMAL ADMISSION: - The entry requirement into 100 level of Building Programme is five (5) Credits at two sittings. Such credits should be in Mathematics, English, Physics and any two others from the following:-
a) Technical Drawing
b) Geography
c) Biology
d) Economics
e) Chemistry
ii) DIRECT ENTRY (200 Level)
a) Holders of HSC, GCE, 'A' Level with passes in Mathematics and Physics.
b) OND/ND at credit level in appropriate disciplines would be admitted to the 200 level of the Programme. Such candidates must meet the admission requirement as in (i) above, or would be required to make up for any deficiencies observed in their academic records.
iii) SPECIAL ADMISSION
a) Transfer cases from other institutions and HND holders with pass at credit level may be admitted to appropriate level of the Programme. Such candidates would be required to make up for any deficiencies inn their academic background.
V) REQUIREMENTS FOR THE AWARD OF a B. Tech. DEGREE
The Programme is a full time undergraduate course in Building of five year duration leading to the award of a B. Tech. Degree in Building. The Programme incorporates 6 months of Industrial Training in the Second Semester of year four. The minimum load should not fall below 160 credit units.
